Oscar Silva Offers Shadow Box Workshops

Member Oscar Silva has offered to teach four 2-day summer workshops at the Gallery.  Each class will include paper-making, knotting, and wrapping, and each student will take home a completed shadow box in which to show their work.

The workshop costs $75, and Oscar will furnish all the materials and tools.  Classes will be from 10 AM to 3 PM with an hour for lunch, and space is limited.

Two spots remain open in the class to be held Monday-Tuesday, June 4-5. 

Once this class is filled, spaces will open in the next class to be held Monday-Tuesday, June 11-12.  If both June classes fill up, Oscar will teach another workshop Monday-Tuesday, July 9-10.  (Oscar will teach a previously scheduled workshop July 16-17 that is already full.)

Call for Entries to Photo Show

The Show Committee has issued a Call for Entries to the second annual photography show, "How I See It," to run Sept. 1 through Halloween Oct. 31, 2012. All artists 18 and older may enter up to three photographs taken in 2008 or later. The outside dimensions must be no greater than 36 x 48 inches, and each piece must be wired for hanging. This year's photographs will be judged in the following categories:

• Landscape/seascape
• Portrait
• Macro (extreme close-up)
• Floral
• Critter

A $100 First Place and two Honorable Mentions will be awarded in each category. The entry fee is $10 per entry, and the deadline for delivery of the entry forms and fees to the SOAL Gallery, 109 N.River St., Seguin, is Aug. 20, 2012. Then deliver your artwork to the Gallery between 10 AM and 6 PM on either Aug. 31 or Sept. 1. The awards will be presented at a public reception Friday, Sept. 7, from 5 to 7 PM. Kids Flock to ArtsFest in Central Park

ArtsFest 2012, hosted all over downtown on the last weekend in March, gave scores of kids the chance to paint with help and direction from members of Texas Lutheran University's Alpha Rho Tau (ART) and the Seguin Oakwood Art League. Two Shows Issue Calls for Entries:

• 3rd Annual High School Art Show May 6-June 28 for grades 9-12. Deliver artwork that is framed/wired to hang on Tuesday, May 1, between 4 and 6 PM. Maximum of two entries per artist.
  
  Opening reception Sunday, May 6, 3-5 PM. Cash prizes of $50, $75, and $100 will be presented to Third, Second, and First Place winners and ribbons to those winning Honorable Mention. The winning artist or a parent must be present at the reception to receive a cash prize.


• Our Best to You Art Show July 6-Aug. 30 for members 18 and older. Turn in completed entry forms by Saturday, June 23, to have your artwork labels printed. Deliver artwork framed and wired to hang on Saturday, June 30, between 10 AM and 12 Noon. All artwork must be for sale.
  
  Opening reception Friday, July 6, 5-7 PM. For $1 each or 6 for $5, reception guests can buy chances to win two $50 certificates and one $100 certificate with which to purchase artwork in the show. The drawing will be at 6:15 PM, and winners must be present to select their prizes.

Both receptions and shows will be at the Gallery, 109 N. River St., Seguin. The Gallery will receive a 25% sales commission on all artwork sold. Insurance coverage is the responsibility of the artist. All artwork will be handled with the greatest possible care. Click below for entry forms:

Watercolor Artists Take Home Cash Prizes

Five entries in the March is Watercolor Month Art Show won cash prizes at the Opening Reception Sunday, March 4.

For the first time, guests at the reception voted on the paintings they liked best. The $100 First Place People's Choice Award went to Carrie Davenport for her "Street Vendors." The $75 Second Place award was presented to Gillian Siemens for her "Blue Bird," and Nancy Russell won the $50 Third Place award for her painting of the historic Sebastopol House.

Each artist was assigned a number when they entered the show, and Sunday two were selected in a drawing to receive Participation Prizes of $50 each. These prizes went to Dane Perry and Kelly Hallmark.

S.O.A.L. Provides Judges for La Vernia Show

Participants in the 2012 La Vernia Arts and Crafts Show signed this Thank You card and presented it to S.O.A.L. representatives Debbie Zengerle and Janelle Hannemann last week. The two attended the show as visiting judges and selected winning artwork and crafts in numerous categories including jewelry, painting, pottery, and more. Debbie is S.O.A.L. president, and Janelle serves as chair of the Gallery Display and Docent Scheduling Committees and co-chair of the Gift Shop. La Vernia is south of Seguin just across the border in Wilson County.

ArtsFest Chance to Involve Community

With the Gallery open as usual and featuring the March is Watercolor Month Show, booths at Trade Days, and demonstrations in Central Park, the art league is taking a large role in the Seguin Art Commission’s 2nd Annual ArtsFest on March 30 and 31.

Saturday members Carolyn Pittman, Robin Roberts Walker, and Mary Cannon will run the S.O.A.L. booth at Trade Days and demonstrate mosaics and painting. They will also sell the spring paintings members have been working on for $20 or less to support the Gallery.

In the next booth kids can paint a fantasy drawn by Terrie Leyton 9 AM-noon and real or imaginary birds 1-3 PM. All over Central Park kids and adults may also get hands-on experience in the demonstrations by members Roger Betschler (clay work), Donna Maske (spinning wool into thread, jewelry making), and Elizabeth Montgomery (weaving). Elizabeth also has her hand-woven hapi coat in the silent auction at the Texas Theater.

An Evening of Jazz and Art supporting the Bird sculpture project for Walnut Springs Park will be held Saturday from 7 to 10 PM at the Texas Theatre. The evening will feature live jazz, silent and live art auctions, and unveiling of the bird sculptures that members Marika Bordes, Howard Crunk, and Roger Betschler have been working on.
